Declining Populations and Self Storage Space

A declining population isn’t always good for business. But three of the five large U.S. counties expected to lose the greatest share of population through 2026 have lower-than-average self-storage square footage, according to a TractIQ analysis.

Cumberland County, N.J., is expected to lose 3.7 percent of its population through 2026; it has only 4.1 square feet of storage space per capita, barely half the U.S. average of 8 square feet. Coconino County, Ariz., predicted to lose 3.4 percent of population, reports 5.8 square feet of self-storage per resident. And Jackson County, Mich., expected to lose 3 percent of residents, has 4.4 square feet of storage per person.

Use TractIQ’s self-storage mapping capability to look at the per-capita self-storage square footage per capita for your county.
